NME Analysis (The Strokes)

Front Cover (NME, 19 February 2011)
This front cover has a colour scheme using the two colours of pink and white. The front cover only includes one large image of the main band that is going to be the main article of the magazine. The image is positioned in the middle of the page with the majority of the band looking directly forwards into the target audience’s eyes to attract their attention. The image shot is a medium shot.

The masthead of the music magazine called NME is positioned in the top left hand corner of the magazine so the  target audience can clearly see the masthead even if a small amount is obscured by the bands heads. The font of the masthead is in capitals and large white font to catch the reader’s eye.

This front cover includes key conventions such as the barcode, the price of the magazine, the date to tell the target audience if the news in this music magazine is recent or old and also includes their website address so the target audience can get information from NME using a different way.

The symbol of the plus sign represents other features that are included in the magazine for the target audience to see and they are set out into three columns so the target audience can easily make out and read them easily. The sub headings are in a pink font and the text underneath is white to separate them both.

The use of quotes on the front cover makes the target audience intrigued by reading them and encourages them to find out more information about that article inside the music magazine.

The main subheading in the middle of the front cover helps the target audience relate the large image so they know what the main article in the music magazine is going to be about without the magazine editors giving to much away to the selected target audience. The main subheading is in pink and white font, with the pink font telling the viewers the name of the band, with the words “world exclusive” being separated in white font so the target audience know that this information can not be found in any other magazine.

Contents (NME, 19 February 2011)

The contents is set out very image dominated as the majority on the contents page is filled with images. The masthead at the top of the page stating “inside this week”, giving the target audience information and guidance to know what will be included in this week’s issue of the music magazine.  The date underneath the masthead tells the target audience if the magazine is recent or old news.

The use of the lines which act as a separator helps the contents page look organised and spread out with all the information in every article separate from other articles.

The colour scheme of this contents page is black and white with the black font on a white background. The subheadings are in a bold black font with the text underneath each subheading being un-bold so the target audience can view the information clearly.

The use of the advert in the corner of the page helps fill up the contents page so it doesn't leave any blank which would make it look unprofessional and helps promote products and generate money for NME.

The use of page numbers next to each image makes it easier for the target audience to use so that they can easily find the article they want without having to look through the whole music magazine. The page numbers are in bold with a white background so they clearly stand out to the audience.

The use of the quotes which are in a different font helps them stand out clearer for the target audience to read and encourages them to find about more information about that certain article.

The use of the banner standing upright helps it include more information for the target audience to find out about.

Double Page Spread (NME, 19 February 2011)

The structure of this double page spread consists of one of the pages filled with an image of the band that is being discussed about in the article and on the other page it is a page filled with text which is structured into three columns with the masthead at the top of the page which is a quote followed by a subheading underneath it.

On the image page at the bottom of the page is a caption which helps describe a little bit more about the story on the other page, it is in white font so it stands out on the black background.

The colour scheme in this double page spread is black for the text and pink for the masthead and subheading the background is also a yellow/ green colour. The masthead is a quote which is in pink colour and is angled so it clearly stands out for the target audience to see and attracts them to read it. Underneath the masthead is the subheading which is a reasonable size font but isn’t as large as the masthead this makes it stand out, just like the masthead, ahead of the other text which is smaller.

The article starts off with a drop capital so the target audience know where the article begins. The drop capital works well with the three colour scheme as it is pink to help it stand out from the articles text which is smaller and in black font.

The image of the band is a medium shot with all their facial expressions looking serious and straight forward into the camera which looks like they are looking at the target audience to intrigue them into reading their article.
