Technical Guide

When using photoshop the main things I did with it was:

  • Change image backgrounds.
  • Cut images out.
  • Smooth Images off.
  • Use shapes off photoshop for text boxes and other uses.
  • I have used different fonts off photoshop for my music magazine.
  • Created a barcode for my music front cover.

When doing this I had to use certain tools from photoshop these were the following tools:

  • The move tool - I used this tool the most as it helped me move my images, shapes and text into place for me to position and structure my music magazine.
  • The eyedropper tool - I used this to create the same colour background so the shading of the colour hadn’t changed.
  • The Magnetic Lasso tool - This tool was very useful as it helped me cut out my images so they stood out on a background that I had chosen.
  • Horizontal type tool - This helped me position and write the text I had chosen and enabled me to chose the size and colour for the font.
  • The Crop tool - This tool helped me crop the pictures to the size I wanted to and without to much background which I didn’t want.
  • The Eraser tool - This allowed me to rub out certain bits of the image that I didn’t require.
  • The Magic Wand tool - This enabled me to easily cut pieces of the image out without needing to use the eraser tool as the magic wand tool was easier to use and saved more time.
  • The Paint Bucket tool - This tool helped me fill my shapes the certain colour I wanted.
  • The Line tool - This help me structure my contents page out with the separation of lines.
  • The Custom Shape tool - This helped me pick out an interesting shape to go on to my front cover.
  • The Rectangle tool – This tool helped me choose rectangles for my contents page so they could be a text box to help the font stand out on the page.

This is the tool bar on Photoshop where i used all my tools from

Diary Entry - (Week 7)

This week for my music magazine project I have continued performing improvements to my front cover, contents and double page spread of my music magazine. As the week has progressed I have just about completed my improvements and I am very impressed with what I have created.
The final lesson of the week I will be starting my evaluation and finding out what to write about and how to construct an interesting evaluation.
Overall, this week has been a good week for creating my music magazine as I am just about up to date with all my work.
Next week I will continue doing my evaluation on my music magazine.

Diary Entry - (Week 6)

In week 6 of my music magazine project I spent first two days evaluating and giving feedback to everyone in my class on my views of their music magazines. They also did this for my music magazine and the feedback I got was fairly positive and I only required a few adjustments to make my music magazine look as good as possible.
Once I had my feedback back I started my final music magazine front cover, contents page and double page spread. I began by making improvements where my target audience and teachers have told me to make.
This week has been a successful week as my feedback I have received shows positives signs of me completing a good music magazine project.
Next week I will continue and try and complete my music magazine.

Rough Cuts Feedback (Target Audience)

The feedback I received from my target audience was quite positive with some good constructive feedback which I have taken note of in order to improve my final draft.

Examples of my audiences’ feedback are:

What do you like about my project at this stage?

·         Good banner “world number 1 music magazine”.
·         Good layout and structure of double page spread.
·         Great images of David Guetta.
·         Good consistent colour scheme and layout of front cover.
·         Good quotes and easy to read and good structure of double page spread.

What could be improved about my project?

·         Contents page is to white.
·         Double Page Spread is not cut out very well.
·         Face of editor needs to be cut out better.
·         Photos of the week are too crammed and unclear.
·         The type of font for title.
·         Strapline should be slightly smaller.
·         Background of some images could be better.

From my rough cut feedback I have decided to make the following improvements to my music magazine:
Front Cover
·         Change the font and slant of the masthead’s name.
·         Make sure the banner over the chest of the large image a more interesting shape.
·         Cut out the image and place a background behind it, to remove the shadow.
·         Change “picture of the week” to “gig of the month”.
Contents Page
·         Change font of contents to a more blocky style font.
·         Change page numbers font and size.
·         Remove the photo of the CD’s.
·         Increase the size of photo for “photo of week” and change it to “gig of the month”.
·         Correct spelling of subscriping to subscribing.
·         Change editor’s photo.
·         Change some of the fonts.
Double Page Spread
·         Smooth out the photo cutting and place a background behind the photo.
·         Change the style of the page number.
·         Correct some spelling and grammar mistakes

Rough Cuts Feedback (Teachers)

Having showed my rough cuts to my teacher Miss Appleby I received the following feedback which I was quite pleased about, especially the positives like “professional Quality”. I have also taken note of the comments in order to improve my work.

Teacher 1

What did you like about my project at this stage?

Front Cover

·         Really strong layout and good elements in layout.

Contents

·         Good Layout.
·         Good colour scheme which creates a good blocky style.

Double Page Spread

·         Text is positioned really well. Good use of quotes, lines, font size and
      formatting.

What could be improved about my project?

Front Cover

·         Some of the shapes are too big/ basic.
·         The magazine title font is weak.
·         Remove the slant on the title.
·         Emphasis the main story.

Contents Page

·         Some fonts are too bold which are hard to read.

Double Page Spread

·         Not a Grammy Award.
·         Photo is too dark and isn’t cut out very well.
·         Page numbers are in a different style.

Teacher 2

What did you like about my project at this stage?

·         The colour scheme as I like the reds at the top it is of a professional quality.
·         Contents Page – It is full up and a good scheme.
·         Double Page Spread – The layout is good and of a professional quality.

What could be improved about my project?

Front Cover

·         The name should be straight and the font does not suit the magazine.
·         The image background is a little dull.
·         Unsure about the use of bold for all stories.

Contents Page

·         Pictures of CD’s take out.
·         Photos of the week use only one image and name ‘gigs of the month’
     instead.
·         Unsure about font for numbers because it doesn't match the style.
·         Your image – badly cut out.

Double Page Spread

·         Image isn’t great and is badly cut out.

Diary Entry (Week 4)

Week 4

In week 4 of my media project I started my rough drafts of my front cover, contents page and double page spread. With all the information from my questionnaire analysis I will try to include as many of the responses as possible this will include the colour scheme of red, black and white for all 3 rough cuts and on the front cover a large image instead of smaller images. The contents page will be image dominated and the double page spread will be an interview with a structure of three columns with a large image on the opposite page of the article. I also scanned my initial ideas onto my blog, to keep my blog up to date.

This week has been a good start to a two week period of creating my magazine as I have completed my front cover rough draft and have just started my contents page.

Next week I will complete my rough draft of my contents page and complete my double page spread by researching information about the music artist I have chosen.

Location Shots

The reason why I have chosen this background was because it had a good effect of lighting when the photo was taken and I wanted my photos on a clear plain background so the image could stand out well. I feel that choosing this background was a good idea as all the images taken with this background and lighting are very effective and have a professional look.

The Background for my three main images of David Guetta
The reason why I have chosen this background for the editor’s picture is that I just needed a simple background which would make the picture of the editor stand out clearly.

Photo Ideas

The reason why I have decided to chose a photo similiar to this for my front cover is because it is a medium shot and the facial expressions of the male character stand out very well. The background and lighting also works very well with the costume that he is wearing and the use of the prop of the sunglasses show his fashion sense.
Front Cover Image
I have decided to base one of my contents images on this photo as the camera angle is very good as he is at an angle with the light shining in the background. Once again the use of the prop of the sun glasses shows the quality of the male character and the facial reactions look very relaxed and laid back.
Contents Page Image

For my Double Page Spread I want to use an image like this because he is holding an award which my article is going to be about and the use of the prop of the award shows his achievement. His costume looks very good and has a good facial expression of success. The shot is a medium shot which enables all the body, waste up with him holding the award above his head.
